Foreign Trade in Figures

Angola has significantly liberalized its trade scheme in recent years, with trade now representing around 67% of the country's GDP (World Bank, latest available data). The country is a member of SADC (Southern African Development Community) and ECCAS (Economic Community of Central African States) and has signed the African Continental Free Trade Agreement. Oil exports account for more than 95% of total exports. Additionally, Angola is a major exporter of diamonds and liquefied natural gas to the American, European, and Japanese markets. Other exports include coffee, sisal, and fish. On the other hand, imports are led by refined petroleum, wheat, cars, and delivery trucks (data OEC).

Angola's main trade partners are China (40.1%), India (9.1%), the United Arab Emirates (6.5%), Spain (6.2%), and the Netherlands (4.9%), while imports primarily come from China (19.3%), Portugal (9.6%), the United Arab Emirates (6.5%), India (6%), and the United States (5.0% - data from OEC for 2023).

Thanks to its comfortable oil revenues, Angola historically records a large but volatile trade surplus that is expected to continue in the coming years. In 2023, merchandise exports decreased to USD 38.3 billion (-25.2% y-o-y) amid lower hydrocarbon prices, with imports decreasing at a slower pace to USD 16.1 billion (-9.5% y-o-y). Services exports were almost non-existent (USD 73 million in 2023), while imports stood at USD 8.1 billion (-27.5% y-o-y – data from WTO). In the same year, the trade surplus amounted to 14.7% of the country’s GDP (from 19.1% one year earlier - World Bank). According to preliminary governmental figures, Angola raised USD 31.4 billion in 2024 from the export of 393.4 million barrels of crude oil, sold at an average price of USD 79.7 per barrel. In 2024, China was the top destination for Angolan exports, accounting for 51.91%, followed by India (10.02%), Spain (6.27%), and Indonesia (4.81%). The volume of crude oil exports increased by 1.80% compared to 2023, while revenue from exports declined by 0.11%. Regarding natural gas, exports in 2024 totalled approximately 4.6 million metric tonnes, generating around USD 2.6 billion.
