Foreign Trade in Figures

Fiji is open to foreign trade, which represents 72% of the country’s GDP (World Bank, latest data available). Even though trade remains very much controlled by the government, customs duties are relatively low, with an average applied tariff rate of around 16.6% (World Bank). However, non-tariff barriers - such as the restrictions on import licences, several different import taxes, tax incentives offered to local exporters – contribute to hindering foreign trade. The country mainly exports petroleum oils (20.6%), water (13.2%), frozen fish (9%), and gold (4.9%); while imports are led by petroleum oils (18.1%), powered aircraft (14.1%), electrical apparatus (2.9%), and motor vehicles (2.1% - Comtrade).

According to preliminary figures from the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2021 Fiji’s major sources of imports were Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, China and the U.S. The main destinations for exports were the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, China, and Vanuatu. To increase the level of exports, the government launched the National Export Strategy (NES).

The country has a structural trade deficit that has been growing in recent years. In 2021, it amounted to USD 2,635.4 million, compared to USD 1,961.3 million a year earlier. Provisional data from the Bureau of Statistics put the 2021 value of goods imported at USD 4,484.9 million, with exports at USD 1,849.5 million. Compared to 2020, total imports and exports increased by 19.5% and 3.2%, respectively.
