The manufacturing sector constitutes 19% of the country’s total exports in terms of volume. Three industries, mechanical, electrical and metal - known in German by the abbreviation MEM - play a central role in the Swiss economy. About 80% of the products of the MEM industries are exported. The MEM industries, together with related fields, such as information and communication technologies, also develop high performing production facilities for numerous other industrial sectors, including the agricultural, automobile, chemical-pharmaceutical, electronic, food and textile industries.
The industrial sector constitutes 25.6% of the Swiss GDP in 2019 (World Bank).
